Words to Know - What is Clear Game Mode?

Clear Game mode is a term for post-endgame content played after the game is considered to be “beaten”. Loosely related to New Game Plus mode, a Clear Game mode allows the player to continue to explore the games world in the aftermath of the final mission rather than starting the game over with bonuses.

Some Clear Game modes offer new missions or side quests to occupy the player or continue the story which are only unlocked after beating the game, such as in Dragon's Dogma and the Pokemon series. Others offer no additional content but provide perspective on how the world of the game has been affected by the players actions in finishing the story, as well as allowing them to complete unfinished side quests and hunt down collectables.

In place of providing post game content some Clear Game modes will reload the player to a point before the final mission was begun, thus allowing them to finish the games story without locking out any side content they have not yet completed. Developer Bethesda Game Studios received a host of complaints when their 2008 game Fallout 3 did not allow players to continue exploring the games expansive open world after completing the main story, instead depositing them back in the menu. This was later rectified when Bethesda released Broken Steel, an expansion pack for Fallout 3 which continued the story following the final mission and allowed the player to continue their characters journey.

Games that feature a Clear Game mode include Mass Effect 2, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and The Elder Scrolls series.

I must apologize for the lapse between posts recently, but things have been busy for me the last few weeks. I'm looking into some things that may help me up my game in regards to the types of content and experience I can bring to Shock and Pause, and I still have my WAIP report on Oxenfree coming down the pipeline. Stay tuned and thanks for reading!
